Hay trade light to moderate
In Kansas, hay market trade activity is light to moderate. Prices mostly steady. Demand is fairly good. There have been a lot of inquiries about purchasing and pricing, but both sides remain hesitant, according to the Kansas Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, August 7. Prices given on a per-ton basis, unless otherwise noted.
Southwest: Dairy alfalfa, grass hay, grinding alfalfa steady, ground and delivered steady to $5 higher, movement slow. Alfalfa, horse, premium, small squares, $280-$300. Dairy, 1-1.05/point RFV, supreme $185-$200; premium, $170-$195; good, $160-$170. Stock or dry cow alfalfa, $190-$200. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, $170-$180. Ground and delivered locally to feedlots and dairies, $200-$215. Grass hay, pasture mix, small squares, $8-$9/bale. Cornstalks, large rounds, $70-$80, ground and delivered $95-$105. Wheat hay, large squares, $110-$120. Wheat straw, large rounds, $65-$75. For the week ending Aug. 4, 9,528 tons of grinding alfalfa and 825 tons of dairy alfalfa were delivered.
South central: Dairy alfalfa, grass hay, grinding alfalfa, steady, ground and delivered, and alfalfa pellets mixed, movement slow. Horse alfalfa, small squares, $190-$200. Dairy, 1-1.05/point RFV, supreme, $185-$210; premium, $170-$195; good, $160-$170. Stock cow alfalfa, $155-$165 delivered. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, $150-$160, with an instance at $180. Ground and delivered locally to feedlots, $175-$185, with an instance $195. Sun-cured alfalfa pellets, 15% protein, $200-$220, 17% protein, $210-$225, dehydrated 17% $245-$255. Grass hay, bluestem, small squares, $8/bale, medium squares, $110-$120, brome, large squares, $75-$85/bale. Oat hay, large squares, $85-$95. Wheat hay, large squares, $145-$155 delivered. Rye hay, large rounds, $95-$105. Cornstalks, none reported. Straw, large rounds, $65-$75. For the week ending Aug. 4, 4,407 tons of grinding alfalfa and 1,885 tons of dairy alfalfa were delivered.
Southeast: Dairy alfalfa, grinding alfalfa, ground and delivered, grass hay steady, movement slow. Horse/goat alfalfa, $220-$245. Dairy, 1-1.05/point RFV. Stock cow alfalfa, $175-$185. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, $145-$155. Ground and delivered, $170-$180. Grass hay, bluestem premium, small squares, $125-$145; good, medium to large squares, $120-$140, large rounds, $100-$110 with instances at $120. Brome, good, medium squares, $130-$150, large squares, $125-$135, large rounds, $110-$120. Oat hay, medium squares, $150-$160. Straw, medium and large squares, $70-$80. Mulch, large rounds, $50-$60. For the week ending Aug. 4, 1,085 tons of grass hay were delivered.
Northwest: Dairy alfalfa, grinding alfalfa and ground and delivered steady, movement slow. Alfalfa, horse or goat, $220-$230. Premium/supreme dairy, 1-1.05/point RFV. Stock cow, fair/good, none reported. Fair/good grinding alfalfa $120-$140. Ground and delivered to feedlots and dairies $145-$165.
North central/northeast: Dairy alfalfa, grass hay, ground and delivered steady to $5 higher, movement slow. Alfalfa horse, premium, small squares, $9-$10/bale. Dairy, 1-1.05/point RFV, supreme $185-$200; premium, $170-$195; good, $160-$170. Stock cow, good, $120-$125. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, $150-$160. Ground and delivered, $175-$185. Grass hay, bluestem, large squares, $105-$115, large rounds, $95-$105. Brome, small squares, $8.50/bale, medium to large squares, 140-$150 delivered, large rounds, $115-$125, or $150 delivered.
