Hay market trade light to moderate
In Kansas, hay market trade activity is light to moderate. Prices mostly steady. Demand is fairly good, according to the Kansas Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, Aug. 21. Prices given on a per-ton basis, unless otherwise noted. Note-this is a repeat of last weeks report. Due to the observance of the Labor Day Holiday there is no update for this week. The next update will be issued Sept. 4, 2018.
Southwest: Dairy alfalfa, grass hay, grinding alfalfa, ground and delivered steady, movement slow. Alfalfa, horse, premium, small squares, $280-$300. Dairy, 1-1.05/point RFV, supreme $185-$210; premium, $170-$195; good, $160-$170. Stock or dry cow alfalfa, $190-$200. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, $170-$180. Ground and delivered locally to feedlots and dairies, $200-$215. Grass hay, pasture mix, small squares, $8-$9/bale. Cornstalks, large rounds, $70-$80, ground and delivered $95-$105. Wheat hay, large squares, $110-$120. Wheat straw, large rounds, $65-$75. Rye hay, large squares, $100-$110. For the week ending Aug. 18, 10,423 tons of grinding alfalfa and 850 tons of dairy alfalfa were delivered.
South central: Dairy alfalfa, grass hay, grinding alfalfa, ground and delivered, alfalfa pellets steady, movement slow. Horse alfalfa, small squares, $190-$200. Dairy, 1-1.05/point RFV, supreme, $185-$210; premium, $170-$195; good, $160-$170. Stock cow alfalfa, $155-$165 delivered. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, $150-$160, with an instance at $180. Ground and delivered locally to feedlots, $175-$185, with an instance $195. Sun-cured alfalfa pellets, 15% protein, $200-$220, 17% protein, $210-$225, dehydrated 17% $245-$255. Grass hay, bluestem, small squares, $8/bale, medium squares, $110-$120, large squares, $140-$145, brome, large squares, $75-$85/bale, large rounds, $130-$135. Oat hay, large squares, $85-$95. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, $170-$180. Ground and delivered, none reported. Grass hay, bluestem premium, small squares, $125-$145; good, medium to large squares, $120-$140, large rounds, $100-$110 with instances at $120. Brome, good, medium squares, $140-$150, large squares, $125-$135, large rounds, $120-$130. Oat hay, medium squares, $150-$160. Straw, medium and large squares, $70-$80. Mulch, large rounds, $50-$60. For the week ending Aug. 18, 1,757 tons of grass hay were delivered.
Northwest: Dairy alfalfa grinding alfalfa and ground and delivered steady, movement slow. Alfalfa, horse or goat, $220-$230. Premium/supreme dairy, 1-1.05/point RFV. Stock cow, fair/good, none reported. Fair/good grinding alfalfa $135-$145. Ground and delivered locally to feedlots and dairies $150-$165. Alfalfa/oat mix, large rounds, $100-$120.
North central/northeast: Dairy alfalfa, grass hay, ground and delivered, grinding alfalfa steady, movement slow. Alfalfa horse, premium, small squares, $9-$10/bale. Dairy, 1-1.05/point RFV, supreme $185-$200; premium, $170-$195; good, $160-$170. Stock cow, good, $120-$125. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, $160-$170. Ground and delivered, $175-$185.
