Corn harvest continues

For the week ending Sept. 9, there were 1.8 days suitable for fieldwork, according to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, Northern Plains Regional Field Office, Kansas. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 2 percent very short, 8 short, 71 adequate, and 19 surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 3 percent very short, 13 short, 77 adequate, and 7 surplus.

Winter wheat planted was 3 percent, equal to both last year and for the five-year average.

Corn condition rated 11 percent very poor, 17 poor, 26 fair, 36 good, and 10 excellent. Corn dented was 89 percent, ahead of 83 last year and 82 average. Mature was 49 percent, ahead of 43 last year and 35 average. Harvested was 9 percent, equal to last year, and near 8 average.

Soybean condition rated 3 percent very poor, 9 poor, 32 fair, 45 good, and 11 excellent. Soybeans setting pods was 95 percent, near 97 last year, and equal to average. Dropping leaves was 16 percent, near 18 last year and 13 average.

Sorghum condition rated 2 percent very poor, 5 poor, 23 fair, 52 good, and 18 excellent. Sorghum coloring was 74 percent, ahead of 63 last year and 65 average. Mature was 10 percent, near 8 last year and 11 average. Harvested was 2 percent, near 1 both last year and average.

Cotton condition rated 1 percent very poor, 1 poor, 27 fair, 58 good, and 13 excellent. Cotton bolls opening was 24 percent, near 22 last year, and ahead of 17 average.
