Corn harvest continues
For the week ending Sept. 16, there were 5.5 days suitable for fieldwork, according to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, Northern Plains Regional Field Office, Kansas. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 2 percent very short, 10 short, 80 adequate, and 8 surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 3 percent very short, 13 short, 82 adequate, and 2 surplus.
Winter wheat planted was 6 percent, equal to last year, and near 7 for the five-year average. Emerged was 1 percent.
Corn condition rated 10 percent very poor, 16 poor, 27 fair, 39 good, and 8 excellent. Corn dented was 94 percent, near 90 last year and 92 average. Mature was 63 percent, near 59 last year, and ahead of 53 average. Harvested was 16 percent, near 18 last year, and equal to average.
Soybean condition rated 3 percent very poor, 9 poor, 32 fair, 46 good, and 10 excellent. Soybeans dropping leaves was 28 percent, behind 35 last year, but near 26 average.
Sorghum condition rated 2 percent very poor, 6 poor, 24 fair, 54 good, and 14 excellent. Sorghum coloring was 86 percent, ahead of 79 last year and 80 average. Mature was 20 percent, near 19 last year, and equal to average. Harvested was 3 percent, near 4 last year, and equal to average.
Cotton condition rated 1 percent very poor, 2 poor, 25 fair, 55 good, and 17 excellent. Cotton bolls opening was 38 percent, ahead of 28 last year and 24 average.
