NASS reports current sorghum crop conditions
According to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, for the week ending Sept. 23 sorghum conditions were as follows in the Midwest Ag/High Plains Journal coverage area:
Nebraska: Sorghum condition rated 1 percent very poor, 1 poor, 14 fair, 56 good, and 28 excellent. Sorghum coloring was 95 percent, near 97 both last year and average. Mature was 48 percent, near 47 last year, and ahead of 41 average. Harvested was 6 percent, behind 11 last year, but near 4 average.
Kansas: Sorghum condition rated 2 percent very poor, 5 poor, 22 fair, 55 good, and 16 excellent. Sorghum coloring was 93 percent, near 89 last year and 90 average. Mature was 32 percent, near 33 both last year and average. Harvested was 6 percent, equal to both last year and average.
Oklahoma: Sorghum coloring reached 85 percent, down 1 point from the previous year and down 6 points from normal. Sorghum mature reached 48 percent, down 4 points from the previous year. Sorghum harvested reached 20 percent, down 6 point from the previous year.
South Dakota: Sorghum condition rated 1 percent very poor, 4 poor, 28 fair, 66 good, and 1 excellent. Sorghum coloring was 85 percent, ahead of 79 last year, but behind 90 average. Mature was 24 percent, behind 29 last year and 35 average. Harvested was 1 percent, near 4 average.
Missouri: Sorghum turning color progressed to 89 percent, while sorghum matured reached 57 percent and sorghum harvested progressed to 17 percent this week. Sorghum condition was rated 5 percent very poor, 18 percent poor, 35 percent fair, 33 percent good, and 9 percent excellent.
