Newell sheep sales report
The St. Onge to Newell Sheep Yards, Newell, South Dakota, reported receipts of 7,138 head selling on Oct. 4, compared to 3,145 head a week ago and 4,322 head last year, according to the USDA-South Dakota Department of Agriculture Market News, Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Compared to a week ago, feeder lambs stayed steady this week. Lambs 55 pounds were lower this week bringing them back to their usual steady price. Cull slaughter ewes were selling $5 higher, Utility’s were selling $5 lower, and Good’s were selling slightly higher at $8. There were many long strings of feeder lambs, ewe lambs, yearlings and replacement ewes. The market was active with very good demand from buyers.
Slaughter ewes: Good 2 to 3, 177 head, 175 lbs., 40.00. Good 3 to 4, 16 head, 207 lbs., 42.00. Utility 1 to 2, 262 head, 153 lbs., 40.00. Cull 1, 222 head, 142 lbs., 43.00.
Feeder lambs: Medium and large frame 1 to 2, 46 to 47 lbs., 181.00 to 183.00 (182.42); 55 to 59 lbs., 201.00 to 202.00 (201.26); 64 to 67 lbs., 182.00 to 184.00 (182.79); 52 head, 64 lbs., 132.00 burry; 39 head, 73 lbs., 179.00; 72 to 78 lbs., 157.00 to 179.00 (164.45); 18 head, 77 lbs., 155.00 Wether; 83 to 89 lbs., 138.00 to 152.00 (143.12); 69 head, 84 lbs., 131.00 burry; 90 to 99 lbs., 127.00 to 140.00 (137.29); 20 head, 94 lbs., 120.00 buck lambs; 101 to 109 lbs., 122.00 to 130.00 (127.98); 112 to 115 lbs., 126.00 to 128.00 (127.38). Medium and large frame 2, 9 head, 39 lbs., 154.00.
Slaughter bucks: 227 lbs., brought 49.00 per hundredweight.
Breeding bucks: Tested 188 lbs., 325.00 to 450.00 per head.
