Sunflower harvest well behind average (South Dakota)
For the week ending Oct. 28, there were 6.0 days suitable for fieldwork, according to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, Northern Plains Regional Field Office, South Dakota. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 3 percent very short, 11 short, 78 adequate, and 8 surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 9 percent very short, 25 short, 61 adequate, and 5 surplus.
Corn condition rated 5 percent very poor, 7 poor, 18 fair, 48 good, and 22 excellent. Corn harvested was 41 percent, ahead of 33 last year, but behind 50 for the five-year average.
Soybeans harvested was 77 percent, behind 94 both last year and average.
Sorghum condition rated 1 percent very poor, 6 poor, 35 fair, 55 good, and 3 excellent. Sorghum mature was 96 percent, equal to both last year and average. Harvested was 33 percent, well behind 53 last year and 67 average.
Sunflowers harvested was 16 percent, well behind 48 both last year and average.
Winter wheat condition rated 2 percent very poor, 9 poor, 45 fair, 42 good, and 2 excellent. Winter wheat planted was 95 percent, near 98 both last year and average. Emerged was 80 percent, behind 89 last year, and near 82 average.
