Son, just let me tell you
some important facts of life.
In dealin’ with your fellow man,
they’ll save a heap of strife.
When you’re doin’ any kind of business,
tradin’ horses or sellin’ cows,
think in terms of the Golden Rule,
not just what the law allows.
You need to make some money
while you are workin’ your plan,
but leave the other guy a little—
don’t make it all on one man.
The Bible says not to muzzle your ox
while he is treadin’ out grain,
so when you have partners or are
workin’ hands,
pay ‘em their fair share of the gain.
Protect your reputation
for now and years beyond.
Speak only the truth when you’re dealin’,
and make your word your bond.
Another thing I know
that will help you to get along—
stand up forever when your right,
but back down when you’re wrong.
This final thought I leave you
to stay with you all of your days,
no matter whether you’re buyin’ or sellin’,
the road still runs both ways.
