Brian Dabson, a research fellow at the School of Government, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will be presenting “The Rural Dimensions of Workforce Development” at the Mid-America Workforce Summit being held at the Topeka (Kansas) Capitol Plaza Maner Conference Center on Jan. 23 to 24, 2019.
The Mid-America Workforce Summit is an annual forum for employers, educators, community members, chamber representatives, legislators and government officials, and local workforce board members to address the new realities facing the workforce and economic development issues in several middle America states.
During his presentation, Dabson will explore how rural areas are subject to the same broad economic forces that are radically reshaping sectors, industries and occupations for the nation as a whole. This reshaping includes the very structure of employment, the untethering of employment from specific location, increased labor market volatility and changing hiring practices. These issues present challenges to achieving economic opportunity in rural regions. Dabson will also discuss how technology and globalization have affected industries and labor markets.
Dabson’s presentation is based on his essay published in the Federal Reserve System’s new publication Investing in America’s Workforce: Improving Outcomes for Workers and Employers available at www.InvestInWork.org.
Dabson became research fellow at the School of Government, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, in July 2016 after serving as associate dean, Research Professor, and director of the Institute of Public Policy in the University of Missouri’s Harry S. Truman School of Public Affairs. Prior to coming to the United States in 1992, he was director of the Center for Employment Initiatives, a UK-based research and technical assistance nonprofit that worked across Europe on community and economic development programs, and in a number of local government planning and economic development positions in Liverpool and Glasgow.
