Springfield Plastics, Inc. has donated more than $1 million to Simmons Cancer Institute at SIU School of Medicine in Springfield, Illinois, and John Stoddard Cancer Center of UnityPoint Health in Des Moines, Iowa, since its Drain for the Cure fundraiser began in 2014.
“Each October our team members, customers, and communities truly come together to support the life-changing work performed at Simmons Cancer Institute and John Stoddard Cancer Center through Drain for the Cure,” said Steve Baker, Springfield Plastics president. “We have this fundraiser every year in honor of our family, friends, employees, and partners who are fighting their own battles with cancer as well as those we have lost to this terrible disease.”
Springfield Plastics donated $144,706.78 to Simmons Cancer Institute (pictured above), and John Stoddard Cancer Center received $30,253 from the proceeds of the 2024 Drain for the Cure fundraiser. Donations were made by employees, customers, vendors, business partners, and friends of Springfield Plastics.

This year, Springfield Plastics welcomed United Community Bank, which serves central Illinois, and Ward Tiling, Inc. of Mt. Sterling, Illinois, to the team as Drain for the Cure partners.
Dale Himstedt of D&H Drainage and Shane Gray of S&J Gray Trucking collected donations through Grain for the Cure, picking up donations of grain right from the field of any farmer willing to drop a few bushels into their dump wagons.
They then took the grain to a local elevator to be sold in the donors’ names. In 2024, Himstedt and Gray raised $26,183.53 for Drain for the Cure. Himstedt started Grain for the Cure in 2021.
Several Central Illinois-area schools also helped support Drain for the Cure through Games for the Cure and other efforts, including Athens High School, Auburn High School, North Mac High School, Tri-City High School, and Waverly Elementary School.
All proceeds from Drain for the Cure will go toward patient care and cancer research and prevention at Simmons Cancer Institute and John Stoddard Cancer Center.
