Kansas hay demand remains unchanged, prices somewhat lower

This past week, there had been no change in demand, but some lower prices were reported, according to the Kansas Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, Sept. 23.

Trade remains slow to moderate. There is still plenty of hay to be put up and plenty of hay to be moved, but the weather has thrown a wrench on many producers plans. Grinding hay movement continues to be steady, while grass hay movement is very slow. Prices based on averages and given on a per-ton basis, unless otherwise noted.

Southwest Kansas—Demand, light. Trade slow. Dairy alfalfa, ground and delivered alfalfa, steady. Alfalfa: Dairy, $1-$1.10/point RFV. Good stock or dry cow, $130-$140 delivered. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, large rounds and large squares, $115-$130 delivered. Ground and delivered locally to feed lots and dairies, $150-$160. For the week ending Sept. 21, it was reported 10,285 tons of grinding alfalfa and no dairy alfalfa was bought or sold. The average paid by feedlots on Sept. 1 for alfalfa ground and delivered was $151.43, up $5.44 from the previous month. Usage was 542 tons/day, down 1.5% from last month and total usage was 16,804.6 tons.

South central—Demand light. Trade slow to moderate. Dairy alfalfa $0.05 lower per point, grinding alfalfa, ground and delivered $5 lower, alfalfa pellets, steady. Alfalfa: Dairy $1-$1.05/point RFV. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, large rounds, $110–$115 delivered, 3×4 and 4×4 squares, $115-$125 delivered. Alfalfa ground and delivered, $130-$140. Sun-cured alfalfa pellets, 15% protein, $215, 17% dehydrated, $340. Grass hay, brome, large round and large squares, $100-$120, small squares $9/bale. For the week ending Sept. 21, it was reported 5,801 tons of grinding alfalfa and 250 tons of dairy alfalfa was bought or sold. The average paid by feedlots on Sept. 1 for alfalfa ground and delivered was $138.24, down $3.69 from the previous month. Usage was 77 tons/day, down 18.9% from last month and total usage was 2,309.3 tons.

Southeast—Demand light. Trade activity slow. Dairy alfalfa steady, bluestem and brome hay $5 lower. Dairy, $1-$1.05/point RFV. Good stock cow, $100-$110. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, large squares, $110-125, delivered. Bluestem grass hay, large rounds, $65-$75, CWF $60, 3×4 and 4×4 squares, $100-$120, small squares, $140-$145. Brome, large squares, $110-$115. For the week ending Sept. 21, it was reported 1,396 tons of grass hay was bought or sold. 

Northwest—Demand light. Trade activity slow. Stock cow, none reported. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, medium 3×3 squares, $150. Wheat straw, large squares, $90-$105.

North central/northeast—Demand light. Trade activity is slow. Dairy alfalfa, grinding alfalfa, alfalfa ground and delivered, all steady. Alfalfa: Dairy $1-$1.05/point RFV; Good stock cow, $125-$135. Fair/good, grinding alfalfa, large rounds and squares, $105-$115 delivered. Alfalfa ground and delivered, $135-$145. Bluestem grass hay, large rounds, $85 CWF. Brome, large rounds, $75-$85. Wheat straw, large squares, $65-80. For the week ending Sept. 21, it was reported 2,011 tons of grinding alfalfa and no dairy alfalfa was bought or sold.
