Kansas hay trade remains slow to moderate
This past week, demand remained slow and prices stayed steady for dairy alfalfa and grass hay, according to the Kansas Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, Oct. 21.
Trade remains slow to moderate. Producers continue with fall harvest while also putting up the last few cuttings alfalfa, which seem to be higher quality. There is still an abundance of forage across the state, but there is no new movement, as most producers are busy in the fields. Prices below reflect the average price. There could be prices higher and lower prices than those published.
Southwest—Demand, light. Trade slow to moderate. Dairy alfalfa, grinding alfalfa, ground and delivered, grass hay steady, stock cow $5 higher. Alfalfa: Dairy, $0.95-$1.00/point RFV. Good quality, Stock or Dry Cow $135-$145 delivered. Fair/good, grinding alfalfa, large rounds and large squares $115-$130 delivered. Ground and delivered locally to feed lots and dairies $145-$155. Alfalfa pellets: Sun cured 15 pct protein $220. Bluestem, large round $75, large square $90. The week of 10/12-10/18, 6,664T of grinding alfalfa and 575T of dairy alfalfa was reported bought or sold.
South central—Demand, light. Trade slow to moderate. Dairy alfalfa, grinding alfalfa, ground and delivered, alfalfa pellets, all steady. Alfalfa: Dairy $1.00-$1.05/point RFV. Good quality, stock or dry cow $130-$140. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, large rounds and squares $110–$120 delivered. Alfalfa ground and delivered $135.00-$145.00. Alfalfa pellets: Sun cured 15 pct protein $215, 17% dehydrated $340. Grass hay, bluestem, large round $110 delivered. Brome, large round and large square $100-$120, small square $9/bale. The week of 10/12-10/18, 5,253.5T of grinding alfalfa and 250T of dairy alfalfa was reported bought or sold.
Southeast—Demand, light. Trade slow to moderate. Dairy alfalfa and grass hay steady. Dairy, $1.00-$1.05/point RFV. Good, stock cow, $100-$110. Grass hay: Bluestem, large round $75-$85, 3×4 and 4×4’s $100-$120, small squares $130-$135. Brome, large square $120-130. Wheat, large square, $70. The week of 10/12-10/18, 1,064T of grass hay was reported bought or sold.
Northwest—Demand light. Trade activity slow. Stock cow, none reported. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, large square $90-$100. Teff, medium square $170-$180, small square $185-$195. Wheat, large square $90-$105.
North central/northeast—Demand light to moderate. Trade activity slow to moderate. Dairy alfalfa $0.05 lower, grinding alfalfa $5 lower, alfalfa ground and delivered, all steady. Grass hay $5 higher. Alfalfa: Dairy $.90-$1.00/point RFV; Stock Cow, good, $125-$135; Fair/good, grinding alfalfa, large rounds and squares $105-$115 delivered. Alfalfa ground and delivered $135-$145. Alfalfa/Oat mix ground and delivered $110-120. Grass hay: Bluestem, large round $65-$80, CWF $85, large square $65-$75. Brome: large rounds $90-$100. Wheat straw, large square $70-$85.
