Kansas hay prices remain steady with slight increase in demand
This past week, demand increased slightly while prices stayed steady, according to the Kansas Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, Nov. 4.
Trade remains slow and steady. Producers have still been busy with harvest and winter wheat planting when they were not being delayed by the scattered storms across the state. There is still plenty of forage across the state, but the recent drop in temperatures has slightly increased demand. Prices below reflect the average price. There could be prices higher and lower prices than those published.
Southwest—Demand, light to moderate. Trade slow to moderate. Dairy alfalfa, grinding alfalfa, ground and delivered, and grass hay, all steady. Alfalfa: Dairy, $0.95-$1.00/point RFV. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, large rounds and large squares, $115-$125 delivered. Ground and delivered locally to feed lots and dairies, $145-$155. Sun-cured alfalfa pellets, 15% protein, $220, 17% protein, $225. Alfalfa, small squares, $10/bale. Bluestem, large squares, $90. The week of 10/26-11/1, 10,468 tons of grinding alfalfa and 550 tons of dairy alfalfa was reported bought or sold.
South central—Demand light to moderate. Trade slow to moderate. Dairy alfalfa, grinding alfalfa steady, ground and delivered, and alfalfa pellets all steady. Alfalfa: Dairy $1.00-$1.05/point RFV. Good stock or dry cow, $130-$140. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, large rounds and squares, $110–$120 delivered. Alfalfa ground and delivered, $140-$150. Sun-cured alfalfa pellets, 15% protein, $210-$215, 17% dehydrated, $335. Grass hay, bluestem, large rounds, $110 delivered. Brome, large rounds, $100-$110, medium squares, $125-$150, small squares, $9/bale. Wheat, large squares, $75-$80. The week of 10/26-11/1, 7,193.5 tons of grinding alfalfa and 450 tons of dairy alfalfa was reported bought or sold.
Southeast—Demand light. Trade slow to moderate. Dairy alfalfa and grass hay steady, stock cow $10 higher. Dairy, $1.00-$1.05/point RFV. Good stock cow, $110-$120. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, large squares, $115–$125 delivered. Grass hay, bluestem, large rounds, $70-$80, 3×4 and 4×4’s, $100-$120, small squares, $130-$135. Brome, large rounds and large squares, $120-130, small squares, $200. Wheat, large squares, $70. The week of 10/26-11/1, 777 tons of grass hay was reported bought or sold.
Northwest—Demand light. Trade activity slow. Stock cow, none reported. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, 3×4 and 4×4, $110-$120. Alfalfa, medium square 3×3, $150.
North central/northeast—Demand light to moderate. Trade activity slow to moderate. Dairy alfalfa, grinding alfalfa, alfalfa ground and delivered, all steady, stock cow and large round brome grass $5 higher. Alfalfa: Dairy $.90-$1.00/point RFV. Good stock cow, $135-$145; Fair/good, grinding alfalfa, large rounds and squares, $105-$115 delivered. Alfalfa ground and delivered, $135-$145. Alfalfa/oat mix ground and delivered, $110-120. Grass hay, Bluestem, large rounds and large squares, $65-$80, CWF $85. Brome, large rounds, $90-$110. The week of 10/26-11/1, 963 tons of grinding alfalfa and 75 tons of dairy alfalfa was reported bought or sold.
