Kansas Hay Report
This past week, demand has stayed steady and prices have also stayed mostly steady according to the Kansas Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, Nov. 18.
Harvest is being wrapped up for most producers and hay movement should continue to stay steady throughout the rest of the fall. Overall, there has not been much change in the hay market in the past few weeks. Prices below reflect the average price. There could be prices higher and lower prices than those published. The next available report will be published Dec. 9.
Southwest—Demand light to moderate. Trade slow to moderate. Dairy alfalfa, grinding alfalfa, ground and delivered, and grass hay, all steady. Alfalfa pellets $5 higher. Alfalfa: Dairy, $0.95-$1.00/point RFV. Good quality, stock or dry cow $140-$150. Fair/good, grinding alfalfa, large rounds and large squares $100-$115 delivered. Ground and delivered locally to feed lots and dairies $145-$155. Alfalfa pellets: Sun cured 15% protein $230, 17% protein $230. Alfalfa, small square $10/bale. Bluestem, large square $90. Brome, large square $160 delivered. The week of 11/9-11/15, 7,969 tons of grinding alfalfa, 475 tons of dairy alfalfa, and 253 ton of grass hay was reported bought or sold. The average paid by feedlots on October 1 for alfalfa ground and delivered was $158.29, up $1.30 from the previous month. Usage was 572 tons per day, down 1% from last month and total usage was 17,736 tons.
South central—Demand light to moderate. Trade slow to moderate. Dairy alfalfa, ground and delivered, and alfalfa pellets all steady. Grinding alfalfa $5 lower. Alfalfa: Dairy $1.00-$1.05/point RFV. Good quality, stock or dry cow $130-$140. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, large rounds and squares $105–$115 delivered. Alfalfa ground and delivered $140-$150. Alfalfa pellets: Sun cured 15% protein $215, 17% dehydrated $335. Alfalfa/Oat mix, chopped $147. Bluestem, large round $100.00 delivered. Brome, large round and large square $100 FOB, $120-$125 delivered, small square $9/bale. Teff, large square $140. Wheat, large round and large square $75-$85. The week of 11/9-11/15, 8,214 tons of grinding alfalfa, 400 tons of dairy alfalfa, and 117 ton of grass hay was reported bought or sold. The average paid by feedlots on October 1 for alfalfa ground and delivered was $131.51, up $2.90 from the previous month. Usage was 203 tons per day and total usage was 6,287 tons.
Southeast—Demand light to moderate. Trade slow to moderate. Dairy alfalfa steady, stock cow $10 higher, grinding alfalfa $10 lower. Dairy, $1.00-$1.05/point RFV. Good, stock cow, $120-$130. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, large squares $105–$115 delivered. Bluestem, large rounds $70-$80, large squares $105-$125, small squares $145-$155. Brome, large squares $120-130, small squares $200. Wheat, large rounds and large squares $80-$90. The week of 11/9-11/15, 1,141 tons of grass hay, 225 ton of grinding hay, and 100 ton of dairy hay was reported bought or sold.
Northwest—Demand light. Trade activity slow. Stock cow, none reported. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, large squares $110-$120. Alfalfa, medium square 3×3, $150, small square $175.
North central/northeast—Demand light to moderate. Trade activity slow to moderate. Dairy alfalfa, grinding alfalfa, alfalfa ground and delivered, all steady. Stock cow and brome hay $5 higher. Alfalfa: Dairy $.90-$1.00/point RFV; Good stock cow, $145-$155. Fair/good, grinding alfalfa, large rounds and squares $105-$115 delivered. Alfalfa ground and delivered $135-$145. Alfalfa/Oat mix, chopped, $110-120. Bluestem, large round $95-$105, large square $65-$75, small square $9/bale. Brome, large rounds $120-$135. The week of 11/9-11/15, 1,255 tons of grinding alfalfa, 50 tons of dairy alfalfa, and 368 ton of grass hay was reported bought or sold.
