Middle of Somewhere, Nebraska – It’s now October 26th and lately fall harvest has been a race. The soybeans are done and corn has begun. Overall, the soybeans yielded well. The corn has average yields. I started soybeans on September 18th and then a rain spell kept us out of the soybean fields until October 5th. We’ve been harvesting for 20 consecutive days and now today a rain shower has slowed us up. Anytime there’s rain in the forecast everyone wants their grain harvested so we are always hustling and doing our very best.

I’ve been busy this past week harvesting dry corn. The moisture has been 13 to 16 percent. I love corn harvest. When I’ve got a flat field with standing corn and the moisture is dry that makes me very happy. Corn is the last crop I harvest each year. My harvest season is May through November so by this time of year everyone is ready to be finished. I love it when the elevators have cooperative hours and let us stay busy when we can be in the field. My attitude is often different though at the end of harvest. I am the one that never wants it to end! I don’t mind the early mornings and late nights. I just want to keep on pickin’ and grinnin’ especially if the weather is right to harvest. I have always liked to keep harvest moving!

As a custom harvester, I always keep an eye to the sky. During October, we’ve had lots of beautiful days to harvest. However, our forecast looks challenging for getting crops harvested. The next few days look like highs in the 60s and 70s and partly cloudy. There are chances of rain showers later this week and into next week, too. We’ve got a long way to go before we are close to finishing. I like to finish before Thanksgiving, but we’ll see what the weather allows us to get accomplished.

I’ve been accepting applications online via www.SchemperHarvesting.com so, if interested, please apply and reserve your position for the 2027 harvest season.
I wish everyone a safe and successful harvest!
