Hay trade slow to moderate
In Kansas, hay market trade activity is slow to moderate. Prices are generally steady and demand is light to moderate. Grinding alfalfa prices were mixed across the state, according to the Kansas Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, Dec. 11. Prices given on a per-ton basis, unless otherwise noted.
Southwest: Dairy alfalfa, grass hay, grinding alfalfa, ground and delivered steady, movement slow. Alfalfa, horse, premium, small squares, $280-$300. Dairy, 1-1.05/point RFV, supreme $185-$210; premium, $170-$195; good, $160-$170. Stock or dry cow alfalfa, $190-$200. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, $170-$180, with an instance $195-$200. Ground and delivered locally to feedlots and dairies, $195-$205, with an instance at $215-$220. Sudan, large rounds, $65-$75. Cornstalks, large rounds, $60-$65, ground and delivered, $80-$90. Wheat straw, large rounds, $65-$70. For the week ending Dec. 8, 9,475 tons of grinding alfalfa and 738 tons of dairy alfalfa were delivered.
South central: Dairy alfalfa, grass hay, ground and delivered, alfalfa pellets steady, grinding alfalfa steady to $5 higher, movement slow. Horse alfalfa, small squares, $200-$210. Dairy, 1-1.05/point RFV, supreme, $185-$210; premium, $170-$195; good, $160-$170. Stock cow, $170-$180 delivered. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, $150-$160. Ground and delivered locally to feedlots, $175-$185, with an instance $200. Sun-cured alfalfa pellets, 15% protein, $210-$220, 17% protein, $210-$225, Dehydrated 17% $245-$255. Grass hay, bluestem, small squares, $8/bale, medium squares, $110-$120, large squares, $130-$140, large rounds, $80-$90. Brome, large squares, $125-$135/bale, large rounds, $85-$95. Stock cow alfalfa, $170-$180. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, $165-$175. Ground and delivered, none reported. Grass hay, bluestem premium, small squares, $135-$145; good, medium squares, $125-$135, large squares, $110-$120, large rounds, $100-$110 with instances at $120. Brome, good, small squares, $145-$155, medium squares, $140-$150, large squares, $120-$130, large rounds, $125-$135. Sudan, large rounds, $80-$90. Oat hay, medium squares, $150-$160. Wheat straw, medium and large squares, $75-$100. Mulch, large rounds, $50-$60. For the week ending Dec. 8, 1,126 tons of grass hay were delivered.
Northwest: Dairy alfalfa, grinding alfalfa and ground and delivered steady to $10 lower, movement slow. Alfalfa, horse or goat, $220-$230. Premium/supreme dairy, 1-1.05/point RFV. Stock cow, fair/good, $160-$165. Fair/good grinding alfalfa $135-$145. Ground and delivered locally to feedlots and dairies $145-$155. Alfalfa/oat mix, large rounds, $100-$120.
North central/northeast: Dairy alfalfa, grass hay and ground and delivered steady, grinding alfalfa steady to $5 lower, movement slow. Alfalfa horse, premium, small squares, $9-$10/bale. Dairy, 1-1.05/point RFV, supreme $185-$200; premium, $170-$195; good, $160-$170. Stock cow, good, $195-$200. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, $140-$150. Ground and delivered, $170-$180.
