Fort Pierre Livestock Auction report
The Fort Pierre Livestock Auction, Ft. Pierre, South Dakota, reported receipts of 4,176 head selling on March 2, compared to 3,059 head a week ago and 7,015 head last year, according to the USDA-South Dakota Department of Agriculture Market News, Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
There was no comparison made on steers under 750 pounds due to limited numbers a week ago. The 750 to 850 pound steers were selling mostly steady to $1 lower. The 850 to 900 pounds were selling $3 to $5 higher. Feeder heifers weighing from 600 to 800 pounds were selling $2 to $5 lower. Quality, flesh condition and amount of tag on the cattle make a big difference in prices received. Good demand for all classes of cattle with several long strings of one iron cattle in this offering. Flesh condition ranged from light-fleshed hay fed cattle to moderate plus on the heavier fleshed back grounded cattle. Market was fairly active with lots of buyer’s participating. A lower futures market for the week may have slowed buyer enthusiasm. The cattle offering was 56% steers, 44% heifers and 93% over 600 pounds.
