Fort Pierre Livestock Auction report
The Fort Pierre Livestock Auction, Ft. Pierre, South Dakota, reported receipts of 6,446 head selling on May 4, compared to 3,763 head selling at the April 20 sale and 5,946 head last year, according to the USDA-South Dakota Department of Agriculture Market News, Sioux Falls South Dakota.
Compared to the April 20 sale, feeder steers under 800 pounds were selling with higher undertones, 800 to 900 pounds were selling steady to $4 higher, over 900 pounds were trading $3 to $6 lower. Feeder heifers under 700 pounds were selling with higher undertones, there were few feeder heifers over 700 pounds on April 20 as most were replacement heifers, so there was no comparison available. There was very good demand for light fleshed cattle to turn out on grass and for replacement heifers, moderate to good demand for heavier cattle bound for feed yards. The offering included 87% over 600 pounds with 38% steers and 62% heifers.
