Newell sheep sales report

The St. Onge Newell Sheep Yards, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, reported receipts of 2,108 head selling on Aug. 16, compared to 3,132 head selling Aug. 2 and 3,992 head last year, according to the USDA-South Dakota Department of Agriculture Market News, Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Compared to the Aug. 2 sale, feeder lambs under 90 pounds were selling $2 to $3 lower, 90 and 100 pound lambs were selling lower by $5 to $10, with the fleshy 100 plus pounds staying steady. Demand was moderate for the offering of light fleshed conditioned lambs. The feeder lambs made up 90% of the offering, the balance was slaughter ewes and bucks. Slaughter ewes were up slightly again this week with the culls and utilities selling $5 to $10 higher.

Slaughter lambs: Wooled Choice 2 to 3, 10 head, 152 lbs., 116.00. Good 2 to 3, 39 head, 177 lbs., 49.00. Good 3 to 4, 24 head, 215 lbs., 55.00. Utility 1 to 2, 78 head, 161 lbs., 48.50. Cull 1, 34 head, 145 lbs., 38.50.

Feeder lambs: Medium and large frame 1 to 2, 67 to 69 lbs., 148.00 to 155.00 (150.39); 71 to 74 lbs., 141.00 to 153.00 (148.60); 80 to 89 lbs., 131.00 to 144.00 (140.51); 91 to 97 lbs., 124.00 to 135.00 (131.62); 19 head, 97 lbs., 133.50 Blackface; 100 to 104 lbs., 123.00 to 129.00 (127.03); 107 to 109 lbs., 127.00 fleshy; 113 to 119 lbs., 124.00 to 125.00 (124.64) fleshy. Small frame 1 to 2, 13 head, 35 lbs., 142.50. Medium frame 1 to 2, 21 head, 46 lbs., 143.00; 15 head, 57 lbs., 149.00.

Slaughter bucks: Average 259 lbs., $2 per hundredweight lower than on Aug. 2.
