Ft. Pierre Livestock Auction report

The Ft. Pierre Livestock Auction, Ft. Pierre, South Dakota, reported receipts of 2,779 head selling on Aug. 17, compared to 4,350 head a week ago and 3,084 head last year, according to the USDA-South Dakota Department of Agriculture Market News Service, Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

July 27 was our most recent reported sale so there is no price comparison is available. There was very good demand for this offering of yearlings and fall calves. The market was active as buyers were trying to refill empty pens. There were many full loads of yearling steers and heifers in light flesh condition with most cattle coming off grass. Along with several packages of weaned fall calves, tested open replacement heifers made up the balance of the sale. Many buyers in the seats trying to buy cattle. The offering included 93% over 600 pounds, with 65% steers; 35% heifers.
