Sorghum heading progresses
Temperatures last week averaged 75.2 degrees, 2.7 degrees above normal. Precipitation averaged 2.02 inches statewide, 1.36 inches above normal. There were 3.0 days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending Sept. 9, according to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, Heartland Regional Field Office, Missouri. Topsoil moisture supply was rated 6 percent very short, 24 percent short, 66 percent adequate, and 4 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was rated 19 percent very short, 33 percent short, 46 percent adequate, and 2 percent surplus. Corn dented reached 95 percent, 4 percentage points ahead of last week. Corn matured reached 66 percent, 23 percentage points ahead of the 5-year average. Corn harvested progressed to 12 percent this week. Corn condition was rated 22 percent very poor, 22 percent poor, 28 percent fair, 23 percent good, and 5 percent excellent. Soybeans setting pods progressed to 95 percent, 4 percentage points ahead of the 5- year average. Soybeans coloring reached 38 percent, 19 percentage points ahead of the 5-year average. Soybeans dropping leaves progressed to 9 percent this week. Soybean condition was rated 8 percent very poor, 19 percent poor, 30 percent fair, 35 percent good, and 8 percent excellent. Cotton bolls opening reached 66 percent, 14 percentage points ahead of last week and 40 percentage points ahead of the 5-year average. Cotton condition was rated 12 percent poor, 33 percent fair, 47 percent good, and 8 percent excellent. Rice harvested progressed to 9 percent this week. Rice condition was rated 10 percent poor, 15 percent fair, 49 percent good, and 26 percent excellent. Sorghum headed progressed to 95 percent. Sorghum turning color progressed to 78 percent, while sorghum matured reached 22 percent and sorghum harvested remained at 1 percent this week. Sorghum condition was rated 2 percent very poor, 21 percent poor, 40 percent fair, 32 percent good, and 5 percent excellent.
