Temperatures last week averaged 73.5 degrees, 2.6 degrees below normal for the week ending Aug. 26, according to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, Heartland Regional Field Office, Missouri. Precipitation averaged 1.72 inches statewide, 1.01 inches above normal. There were 4.8 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture supply was rated 29 percent very short, 33 percent short, 37 percent adequate, and 1 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was rated 42 percent very short, 32 percent short, and 26 percent adequate. Corn dented reached 88 percent, 9 percentage points ahead of last week. Corn matured reached 30 percent, 19 percentage points ahead of the 5-year average. Corn condition was rated 22 percent very poor, 23 percent poor, 27 percent fair, 23 percent good, and 5 percent excellent. Soybeans blooming progressed to 96 percent. Soybeans setting pods progressed to 85 percent, 10 percentage points ahead of the 5-year average. Soybeans coloring reached 7 percent, 5 percentage points ahead of the 5-year average. Soybean condition was rated 14 percent very poor, 22 percent poor, 28 percent fair, 30 percent good, and 6 percent excellent. Cotton bolls opening reached 46 percent, 6 percentage points ahead of last week. Cotton condition was rated 10 percent poor, 27 percent fair, 50 percent good, and 13 percent excellent. Rice condition was rated 11 percent poor, 16 percent fair, 51 percent good, and 22 percent excellent. Sorghum headed progressed to 90 percent. Sorghum turning color progressed to 58 percent, while sorghum matured reached 7 percent this week. Sorghum condition was rated 3 percent very poor, 23 percent poor, 37 percent fair, 33 percent good, and 4 percent excellent.
