Dry edible bean harvest nearly completed (Minnesota)
Cool temperatures, clouds and rainfall were common throughout much of the state during the week ending Oct. 7, according to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, Upper Midwest Regional Field Office, Minnesota. There were 2.9 days suitable for fieldwork. Field activities for the week included harvesting corn, soybeans, dry edible beans, potatoes, sunflowers and sugarbeets. There were several reports of the wet weather hindering harvest activity.
Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 0 percent very short, 2 percent short, 61 percent adequate and 37 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 1 percent very short, 6 percent short, 65 percent adequate and 28 percent surplus.
Corn mature was at 96 percent, 13 days ahead of the five-year average. Harvest of corn for grain at 15 percent complete was over 2 weeks ahead of last year and 5 days ahead of average. Corn for silage harvest was 96 percent complete, 10 days ahead of average. Corn crop condition was rated 77 percent good to excellent. Ninety-eight percent of the soybean crop was dropping leaves, almost 2 weeks ahead of average. Thirty-seven percent of the soybean crop was harvested, 6 days ahead of last year but 3 days behind average. Soybean condition was rated 72 percent good to excellent.
Ninety-seven percent of dry edible beans have been harvested, 12 days ahead of average. Sunflower harvest was 16 percent complete, 1 day behind average. Sunflower condition was rated at 63 percent good to excellent. Potato harvest was 87 percent complete, 2 days ahead of average. Sugarbeet harvest was 41 percent complete, 6 days ahead of average. Sugarbeet condition was unchanged, at 75 percent good to excellent.
