Sunflower harvest well behind last year (South Dakota)

For the week ending Nov. 4, there were 5.1 days suitable for fieldwork, according to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, Northern Plains Regional Field Office, South Dakota. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 3 percent very short, 12 short, 79 adequate, and 6 surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 8 percent very short, 23 short, 65 adequate, and 4 surplus.

Corn condition rated 5 percent very poor, 8 poor, 17 fair, 44 good, and 26 excellent. Corn harvested was 59 percent, near 57 last year, but behind 70 for the five-year average.

Soybeans harvested was 92 percent, behind 99 last year and 97 average.

Sorghum condition rated 1 percent very poor, 2 poor, 19 fair, 73 good, and 5 excellent. Sorghum harvested was 63 percent, behind 71 last year and 80 average.

Sunflowers harvested was 45 percent, well behind 66 last year, and behind 62 average.

Winter wheat condition rated 1 percent very poor, 7 poor, 33 fair, 58 good, and 1 excellent. Winter wheat emerged was 84 percent, behind 94 last year and 91 average.
