Southwest District hosts invitational judging contests

Nearly 250 4-H and FFA students traveled to Dodge City, Kansas, on March 27, to compete in the Southwest District Livestock Judging Invitational contest. FFA students also competed in an entomology judging contest.  

Divisions included: Senior FFA (10th, 11th and 12th grades) and Junior FFA (9th and below); Senior 4-H (13 to 18 years old) and Junior 4-H (9 to 12 years old). The contestants judged seven classes of livestock, which featured market steers, market lambs, market goats, breeding ewes, breeding heifers, breeding does and a class of keep-cull breeding heifers. Seniors in both divisions gave two sets of oral reasons, while the junior divisions gave one set of oral reasons and answered one set of questions.  

FFA chapters competing included: Ashland, Bucklin, Cimarron, Deerfield, Dodge City, Ellis, Garden City, Greeley County, Hodgeman County, Holcomb, Hugoton, Ingalls, Kiowa County, Lacrosse, Lakin, Leoti, Ness City, Satanta, Scott City, South Central, Southwestern Heights, Stanton County, Sublette, Syracuse, and Ulysses. 

4-H counties competing included: Ford, Greeley, Hodgeman, Meade, Pawnee, and Wichita counties.
