A custom harvesting crew began cutting spring wheat in Nebraska after completing its winter wheat harvest, but uneven crop maturity and elevated grain moisture limited the amount of acreage ready for harvest.

The crew entered the day expecting to harvest about four fields, although operators anticipated only one or two would be dry enough to cut before additional rainfall. Several days of temperatures exceeding 100 degrees accelerated crop maturity, but grain samples still showed significant differences in moisture levels.

According to the operator, wheat collected from the first field contained a mixture of dry grain testing about 10 to 11 percent moisture and greener kernels estimated at 18 to 20 percent moisture. The variability prevented the crew from harvesting the field because combining wetter grain could create storage and quality problems.

Before heading to the field, the crew fueled combines and completed routine equipment inspections, including hydraulic oil and coolant checks. The operation also noted improvements made to its fuel trailer after replacing an electric pump with a gas-powered unit that speeds refueling between fields.

The operator also pointed to repairs completed during the previous offseason, including replacement of a power takeoff shaft damaged during last year’s harvest. While another minor issue remained with the replacement component, the crew elected to postpone repairs until weather delays provided additional maintenance time.

With additional rain expected and several fields still immature, the crew planned to monitor crop conditions before resuming harvest. The delayed start reflects the uneven maturity that has characterized portions of this year’s wheat crop across the region.
