Kimberly: A wild harvest

It has been a wild harvest season to say the least. Our summer run didn’t start the way we were hoping it would but that’s life right, nothing goes the way you want. We usually start our run in Texas but this year the weather had a different plan for us. We started our run in Oklahoma this year with only nine of the ten machines and got stuck there for roughly 27 days. I don’t think we got a full week of combining in while we were as the rain decided to either rain every other day or dump inches on us. At one point we had lake front property at camp. Van Driesten Harvestig was camping across from us and Brittany and I would joke that we needed to go by a canoe to get to each other’s camper.

The wheat run was pretty rough as the drought hit a majority of our stops and if it wasn’t the drought, it was the hail storms. We had a lot more down time this year then we have had in the past so the employees got to go on many adventures. They got to take in the mountains in Colorado, Top golf, ax throwing and some museums in Oklahoma, many baseball and kickball games in Western KS, a trip West Yellowstone and Medora.

It was a very slow start to our fall harvest as the weather once again decided to change our plans. When we thought we could go on our beans and the neighbors the weather decided to have ten days of cloudy, foggy, misting and cold. Then it decided to rain for three days. Logan has been up in Westhope ND since the middle of August working on Canola, Peas and has started Soybeans this week. Cole has been in Langdon working on Canola, Wheat and Soybeans but the weather has not been in their favor either. The Northen part of the state has gotten a lot of moisture the past month that some farmers have just finished their wheat. We have been so drying all summer and some areas the past week have received up to 6 inches of rain. Mychal has been home since the end of August waiting for the fall rush to start. He finished his jobs in western North Dakota and brought machines home to get them all ready for the next push. Since we had some employees here, they became gravel haulers and construction works. We needed to do some dirt work around the shop and bin site so we kept them busy for a few weeks. Roger and Renee decided to retire last fall and we needed someone to fill for them. Kyle worked for us last year and we made the decision to hire him as our foreman. He has done a few jobs on his own and we are very thankful to have his knowledge and great leadership and know that the job will get done while we are split up. He is currently in Turtle Lake North Dakota and should finish the beans today.

I came back home the beginning of August since Bentley started football early and then school started shortly after that. It’s been a busy fall running for Bentley’s football games, Payzlee’s basketball games, cooking, being in the field and everything in between. Fall sports are coming to an end so I will have a small break until Wrestling season starts.
