Aberdeen livestock auction report
The Hub City Livestock Auction, Aberdeen, South Dakota, reported receipts of 6,866 head on March 14, compared to 3,320 head last week and 4,402 head last year, according to the USDA-South Dakota Department of Agriculture Market News, Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Compared to a week ago, the steers weighing 750 to 800 pounds were mostly steady with instances up to $3 higher, with those 800 to 850 pounds and 900 to 950 pounds were selling $2 to $4 lower and 951 to 1,000 pounds were steady. The heifers from 650 to 700 pounds and 750 to 900 pounds were mostly steady. Other weight classes of steers and heifers were not well compared. There was good demand for this large offering of strings, loads, and packages, which were selling on an active market. The flesh condition remains similar to the previous week with the offering in varied flesh. The quality was attractive throughout the sale. Clean hided, open haired cattle really stood out as the warmer weather was melting last week’s snow making the yards muddy and quite a bit of the offering was carrying some tag. The steers tagged value added qualified for either drug-free or non-hormone treated cattle programs. Steers made up 63% of the offering and 37% were heifers with 97% over 600 pounds.
