Newell sheep sales report

The St. Onge Newell Sheep Yards, St. Onge, South Dakota, reported receipts of 2,739 head selling on Nov. 1, compared to 6,160 head a week ago and 2,006 head last year, according to the USDA to South Dakota Department of Agriculture Market News, Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Compared to a week ago, feeder lambs carried unusually high spreads. Over 100 pounds were selling $3 to $9 higher while under 100 pounds were selling $8 plus higher. Market was active with the addition of uncommon buyers creating extra bidding activity. There was moderate demand with long, uniform strings of good quality lambs. Slaughter ewes also were affected by the extra buying power resulting in $1.50 to $6.50 higher with heavy goods breaking high over the average. Feeder lambs made up 76% of the market, 24% is slaughter ewes and replacements.

Slaughter ewes: Good 2 to 3, 129 head, 172 lbs., 47.00. Good 3 to 4, 41 head, 205 lbs., 56.00. Utility 1 to 2, 176 head, 156 lbs., 47.50. Cull 1, 134 head, 141 lbs., 51.00.

Feeder lambs: Medium and large frame 1 to 2, 12 head, 48 lbs., 200.00; 61 to 69 lbs., 203.00 to 222.50 (210.84); 72 to 78 lbs., 172.00 to 190.00 (186.21); 80 to 88 lbs., 145.00 to 173.00 (166.57); 95 to 99 lbs., 143.50 to 145.00 (144.00); 101 to 108 lbs., 133.00 to 136.00 (133.97); 151 head, 114 lbs., 122.00; 121 to 123 lbs., 126.00 to 135.00 (126.96); 11 head, 136 lbs., 125.00 wethers. Medium and large frame 2, 34 head, 54 lbs., 219.00.

Tested bucks: 2 at 210.00 per head at 253 lbs.

Replacement ewes: Short term, 88 head, 161 lbs., average, 115.00 per head.
