Newell sheep sales report

The St. Onge to Newell Sheep Yards, Newell, South Dakota, reported receipts of 1,623 head selling on Oct. 11, compared to 7,138 head a week ago and 4,026 head last year, according to the USDA-South Dakota Department of Agriculture Market News, Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Compared to a week ago, food slaughter ewes were selling steady while utilities were selling up $7 and culls were selling down $5. In a narrow comparison, feeder lambs were selling $6 to $10 higher with the exception of the 70 pound to 80 pound lambs that were staying steady. One heavy string of lambs were brought with a couple smaller ones. Market activity and demand were both moderate. The offering included 85% of feeder lambs, the balance consisted of slaughter bucks, slaughter ewes and replacement ewes.

Slaughter ewes: Good 2 to 3, 67 head, 184 lbs., 40.00. Utility 1 to 2, 50 head, 155 lbs., 47.00. Cull 1, 17 head, 129 lbs., 38.00.

Feeder lambs: Medium and large frame 1 to 2, 56 to 59 lbs., 201.00 to 209.00 (207.96); 77 to 78 lbs., 159.00 to 164.00 (163.61); 20 head, 83 lbs., 151.00; 91 to 96 lbs., 146.00 to 151.50 (150.80); 100 to 108 lbs., 129.00 to 139.00 (134.88); 50 head, 111 lbs., 128.00; 10 head, 126 lbs., 111.00. Large frame 1 to 2, 96 head, 169 lbs., 88.00 buck lambs.

Slaughter bucks: 219 lbs., brought 45.00 per hundredweight; 32 head, 5 year 105.00; 26 head, short solid to ST 85.00; 11 head, short solid to ST 75.00.
