Cattle on feed numbers released

Colorado: The number of cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in Colorado feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 head or larger was estimated at 890,000 head as of Aug. 1. The latest inventory was 4 percent below last month, but up 1 percent from the Aug. 1, 2017, inventory.

Cattle feeders with 1,000 head or larger capacity marketed an estimated 170,000 head of fed cattle during July 2018, up 6 percent from the previous month and 6 percent above marketings one year earlier. 

An estimated 140,000 cattle and calves were placed on feed during July 2018, 3 percent below last month’s placements, but 22 percent above the July 2017 placements. Of the number placed in July, 21 percent weighed less than 600 pounds, 14 percent weighed from 600 to 699 pounds, 21 percent weighed from 700 to 799 pounds, 21 percent weighed 800 to 899 pounds and 21 percent weighed 900 pounds or greater. 

Other disappearance for July, at 10,000 head, was 5,000 head above last month and last year.

Iowa: Cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in Iowa feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 700,000 head on Aug. 1, according to the latest National Agricultural Statistics Service, Cattle on Feed report. This was down 1 percent from July 1, 2018, but up 8 percent from Aug. 1, 2017. Iowa feedlots with a capacity of less than 1,000 head had 470,000 head on feed, down 6 percent from last month but unchanged from last year. Cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in all Iowa feedlots totaled 1,170,000 head, down 3 percent from last month but up 4 percent from last year.

Placements of cattle and calves in Iowa feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 or more head during July totaled 66,000 head, down 14 percent from last month but up 10 percent from last year. Feedlots with a capacity of less than 1,000 head placed 47,000 head, up 2 percent from last month and up 18 percent from last year. Placements for all feedlots in Iowa totaled 113,000 head, down 8 percent from last month but up 13 percent from last year.

Marketings of fed cattle from Iowa feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 or more head during July totaled 74,000 head, down 13 percent from last month and down 6 percent from last year. Feedlots with a capacity of less than 1,000 head marketed 75,000 head, up 1 percent from last month but down 3 percent from last year. Marketings for all feedlots in Iowa were 149,000 head, down 6 percent from last month and down 4 percent from last year. Other disappearance from all feedlots in Iowa totaled 4,000 head.

Kansas: In Kansas feedlots with capacities of 1,000 or more head, yards contained 2.23 million cattle on feed on Aug. 1, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service. This inventory was up 2 percent from last year.

Placements during July totaled 465,000 head, up 8 percent from 2017.

Fed cattle marketings for the month of July totaled 465,000 head, up 8 percent from last year. Other disappearance during July totaled 10,000 head, unchanged from last year.

Minnesota: Cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in Minnesota for feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 130,000 head on Aug. 1, according to the latest National Agricultural Statistics Service, Cattle on Feed report. This is down 5,000 head from last month but equal to last year.

Placements during July totaled 17,000 head, up 3,000 head from last month and up 2,000 head from last year. 

Marketings for July were 21,000 head, down 2,000 head from last month and down 3,000 head from last year. 

Other disappearance totaled 1,000 head.

Nebraska: In Nebraska feedlots with capacities of 1,000 or more head, yards contained 2.33 million cattle on feed on Aug. 1, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service. This inventory was up 8 percent from last year.

Placements during July totaled 400,000 head, up 4 percent from 2017.

Fed cattle marketings for the month of July totaled 460,000 head, up 3 percent from last year. 

Other disappearance during July totaled 10,000 head, unchanged from last year.

Oklahoma: Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in Oklahoma feedlots with capacity of 1,000 head or more totaled 315,00 head on Aug. 1, unchanged from a year ago. 

Producers placed 45,000 head in commercial feedlots during July, up 10 percent from a year ago. 

Oklahoma commercial feeders marketed 43,000 head during July, down 14 percent from 2017. 

Other disappearance during July totaled 2,000 head, up 1,000 head from a year ago.

South Dakota: In South Dakota feedlots, with capacities of 1,000 or more head, pens contained 200,000 cattle on feed on Aug. 1, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service. This inventory was down 9 percent from last year.

Placements during July totaled 26,000 head, unchanged from 2017.

Fed cattle marketings for the month of July totaled 37,000 head, up 28 percent from last year. 

Other disappearance during July totaled 4,000 head, up 2,000 head from last year. 

Texas: Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in Texas feedlots with capacity of 1,000 head or more totaled 2.72 million head on Aug. 1, up 3 percent from a year ago. Producers placed 385,000 head in commercial feedlots during July, up 1 percent from a year ago. Texas commercial feeders marketed 390,000 head during July, unchanged from 2017.

On Aug. 1, there were 2.38 million head of cattle and calves on feed in the Northern High Plains, 88 percent of the state’s total. The number on feed across the area was up 2 percent from last year but down 1 percent from the July 1 total. July placements in the Northern High Plains totaled 340,000 head, down 10 percent from the June total. Marketings were down 4 percent from last month at 341,000 head. 

United States: Cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 11.1 million head on Aug. 1. The inventory was 5 percent above Aug. 1, 2017. This is the highest Aug. 1 inventory since the series began in 1996. 

Placements in feedlots during July totaled 1.74 million head, 8 percent above 2017. Net placements were 1.68 million head. During July, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds were 410,000 head, 600-699 pounds were 290,000 head, 700-799 pounds were 415,000 head, 800-899 pounds were 367,000 head, 900-999 pounds were 175,000 head, and 1,000 pounds and greater were 85,000 head. 

Marketings of fed cattle during July totaled 1.87 million head, 5 percent above 2017. 

Other disappearance totaled 63,000 head during July, 31 percent above 2017.
