Cattle on feed numbers released

Colorado: The number of cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in Colorado feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 head or larger was estimated at 980,000 head as of Oct. 1. The latest inventory was 9 percent above last month and 4 percent above the Oct. 1, 2017 inventory. The inventory included 550,000 steer and steer calves, 2 percent below the previous year. The number of heifer and heifer calves, at 430,000 head, are up 13 percent from a year ago. 

Cattle feeders with 1,000 head or larger capacity marketed an estimated 150,000 head of fed cattle during September 2018. This was 21 percent below last month’s marketings and 9 percent below September 2017 marketings. 

An estimated 235,000 cattle and calves were placed on feed during September, 15 percent above the previous month’s placements, but 6 percent below September 2017 placements. Of the number placed in September, 13 percent weighed less than 600 pounds, 11 percent weighed from 600 to 699 pounds, 19 percent weighed from 700 to 799 pounds, 30 percent weighed from 800-899 pounds, and 28 percent weighed 900 pounds and greater. 

Other disappearance for September, at 5,000 head, was the same as last month and last year.

Iowa: Cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in Iowa feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 690,000 head on Oct. 1, according to the latest National Agricultural Statistics Service. Cattle on Feed report. This was up 1 percent from Sept. 1, 2017, and up 6 percent from Oct. 1, 2017. Iowa feedlots with a capacity of less than 1,000 head had 400,000 head on feed, down 6 percent from last month and down 10 percent from last year. 

Cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in all Iowa feedlots totaled 1,090,000 head, down 1 percent from last month and down marginally from last year.

Placements of cattle and calves in Iowa feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 or more head during September totaled 89,000 head, up 9 percent from last month but down 16 percent from last year. Feedlots with a capacity of less than 1,000 head placed 27,000 head, down 10 percent from last month and down 61 percent from last year. Placements for all feedlots in Iowa totaled 116,000 head, up 4 percent from last month but down 34 percent from last year.

Marketings of fed cattle from Iowa feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 or more head during September totaled 75,000 head, down 25 percent from last month and down 21 percent from last year. Feedlots with a capacity of less than 1,000 head marketed 50,000 head, down 32 percent from last month and last year. Marketings for all feedlots in Iowa were 125,000 head, down 28 percent from last month and down 26 percent from last year. 

Other disappearance from all feedlots in Iowa totaled 6,000 head.

Kansas: In Kansas feedlots with capacities of 1,000 or more head, yards contained 2.37 million cattle on feed on Oct. 1, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service. This inventory was up 5 percent from last year.

Placements during September totaled 445,000 head, up 2 percent from 2017.

Fed cattle marketings for the month of September totaled 375,000 head, down 4 percent from last year.

Other disappearance during September totaled 10,000 head, down 5,000 head from last year.

Minnesota: Cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in Minnesota for feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 130,000 head on Oct. 1, according to the latest National Agricultural Statistics Service, Cattle on Feed report. This is up 5,000 head from last month and up 10,000 head from last year.

Placements during September totaled 24,000 head, up 1,000 head from last month but down 2,000 head from last year. Marketings for September were 18,000 head, down 9,000 head from last month and down 7,000 head from last year. Other disappearance totaled 1,000 head.

Minnesota: Cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in Minnesota for feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 130,000 head on Oct. 1, according to the latest USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service, Cattle on Feed report. This is up 5,000 head from last month and up 10,000 head from last year.

Placements during September totaled 24,000 head, up 1,000 head from last month but down 2,000 head from last year. Marketings for September were 18,000 head, down 9,000 head from last month and down 7,000 head from last year. Other disappearance totaled 1,000 head.

Nebraska: In Nebraska feedlots with capacities of 1,000 or more head, pens contained 2.43 million cattle on feed on Oct. 1, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service. This inventory was up 6 percent from last year.

Placements during September totaled 520,000 head, down 9 percent from 2017.

Fed cattle marketings for the month of September totaled 410,000 head, down 2 percent from last year.

Other disappearance during September totaled 10,000 head, unchanged from last year.

Oklahoma: Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in Oklahoma feedlots with capacity of 1,000 head or more totaled 325,000 head on Oct. 1, up 2 percent from a year ago. 

Producers placed 55,000 head in commercial feedlots during September, down 13 percent from a year ago. Oklahoma commercial feeders marketed 48,000 head during September, down 14 percent from 2017. Other disappearance during September totaled 2,000 head, unchanged from a year ago.

South Dakota: In South Dakota feedlots with capacities of 1,000 or more head, pens contained 215,000 cattle on feed on Oct. 1, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service. This inventory was down 2 percent from last year.

Placements during September totaled 59,000 head, up 23 percent from 2017.

Fed cattle marketings for the month of September totaled 42,000 head, unchanged from last year. Other disappearance during September totaled 2,000 head, up 1,000 head from last year.

Texas: Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in Texas feedlots with capacity of 1,000 head or more totaled 2.66 million head on Oct. 1, up 2 percent from a year ago. Producers placed 395,000 head in commercial feedlots during September, down 10 percent from a year ago. Texas commercial feeders marketed 405,000 head during September, down 2 percent from 2017.

On Oct. 1, there were 2.32 million head of cattle and calves on feed in the Northern High Plains, 87 percent of the state’s total. The number on feed across the area was up 2 percent from last year but down 1 percent from the Sept. 1 total. 

September placements in the Northern High Plains totaled 351,000 head, down 3 percent from the August total. 

Marketings were down 8 percent from last month at 360,000 head.

United States: Cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 11.4 million head on Oct. 1. The inventory was 5 percent above Oct. 1, 2017. This is the highest Oct. 1 inventory since the series began in 1996. The inventory included 7.09 million steers and steer calves, up 2 percent from the previous year. This group accounted for 62 percent of the total inventory. Heifers and heifer calves accounted for 4.31 million head, up 11 percent from 2017. 

Placements in feedlots during September totaled 2.05 million head, 5 percent below 2017. Net placements were 1.99 million head. During September, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds were 425,000 head, 600-699 pounds were 330,000 head, 700-799 pounds were 430,000 head, 800-899 pounds were 466,000 head, 900-999 pounds were 280,000 head, and 1,000 pounds and greater were 120,000 head. Marketings of fed cattle during September totaled 1.72 million head, 4 percent below 2017. Other disappearance totaled 57,000 head during September, 2 percent below 2017.
