McAlester Union Livestock market report

The McAlester Union Livestock Auction, McAlester, Oklahoma, reported receipts of 1,450 head selling Dec. 18, compared to 1,450 head a week ago and 1,300 head last year, according to the USDA-Oklahoma Department Agriculture Market News, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Compared to a week ago, steer calves under 600 pounds were selling steady to $2 lower, over 600 pounds were selling $3 to $8 higher. Heifer calves under 500 pounds were selling $5 to $6 lower, over 500 pounds were selling $2 to $5 higher. Quality was average. Demand was moderate. The supply included 17% over 600 pounds with 48% heifers. Slaughter cows were selling $7 to $10 higher. Slaughter bulls were selling $2 higher. A total of 250 cows and bulls sold with 77% going to packers. The Union Stockyards will be closed the next two weeks for the holidays. The next sale will be Jan. 8, 2019.
