Weather forces cancellation of Championship Sunday at the Dodge City Roundup Rodeo

Championship Sunday at the Dodge City Roundup Rodeo is normally the best to watch. Top rodeo athletes paired with the top bucking stock or fast times in the roping or barrel race can equal some record-breaking performances. However, Aug. 3, the weather took top billing.

Severe thunderstorm warnings went out in the early evening, and by 7:30 p.m., a flash flood watch was issued. Later an emergency alert from the National Weather Service went out regarding a severe thunderstorm warning with destructive 90 mph winds.

Dodge City Roundup Rodeo officials initially paused the start time of the rodeo about 30 minutes and later pushed it back for an hour past the 7:45 p.m. start time.

Around 9 p.m., a Roundup social media post said, “Due to unsafe rodeo grounds, tonight’s performance has been canceled. This was an incredibly difficult decision, but the safety of our contestants and livestock must come first. We truly appreciate your continued support of the 2025 Dodge City Roundup Rodeo. At this time, per our policy, no refunds will be given. https://www.dodgecityroundup.org/purchase-policy.”

As of Aug. 4, DCRR officials are working on a solution for possible refunds.

Championship Sunday is the culmination of the nearly week-long event which started in 1977. The first rodeo hosted 175 contestants who competed for an $8,200 purse. According to the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association website, the 2025 payout was $399,530. Contestant payouts were adjusted accordingly due to the cancelation of the Aug. 3 event.
