Limited test sees light demand and moderate trade for Kansas hay
This past week, demand was light, trade was moderate, and prices were steady, on limited test according to the Kansas Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, May 27.
There have been no new crop contracts made, as everyone seems to be holding out for test results and an increase in supply. Grass hay still seems to be in abundance, and old crop grinding alfalfa continues to move. Prices are based on averages and given on a per-ton basis, unless otherwise noted.
Southwest—Demand, light. Trade activity is steady. Dairy alfalfa, ground and delivered, steady. Grinding alfalfa $5 higher. Alfalfa: Dairy, $1-$1.10/point RFV. Good stock or dry cow hay, $125-$135. Fair/good, grinding alfalfa, large rounds $105-$115, large squares, $105-115. Sun-cured alfalfa pellets, 15% protein, $215-$220, 17% protein, $220-$225. Ground and delivered locally to feed lots and dairies, $150-$160. Bluestem grass hay, large rounds, $80-90 delivered. For the week ending May 24, it was reported 4,538.5 tons of grinding alfalfa and no dairy alfalfa was bought or sold.
South central—Demand, light to moderate. Trade activity light to moderate. Dairy alfalfa steady, alfalfa pellets steady. Grinding alfalfa steady. Ground and delivered steady. Alfalfa, small squares, $10/bale. Alfalfa: Dairy $0.95-$1.05/point RFV. Good stock cow, $125-$135. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, large rounds, $100–$110 delivered, 3×4 and 4×4 squares, $105-$115 delivered. Alfalfa ground and delivered, $135-$145. Sun-cured alfalfa pellets, 15% protein, $210-$215, 17% dehydrated, $340. Bluestem grass hay, large rounds, $80 delivered. For the week ending May 24, it was reported 6,994 tons of grinding alfalfa and 1,125 tons of dairy alfalfa was bought or sold.
Southeast—Demand light. Trade activity is slow. Dairy alfalfa, steady. Bluestem and brome hay price steady. Dairy, $1.05-$1.10/point RFV. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, large squares, $90-100. Bluestem grass hay, large rounds, $70-$80, 3×4 and 4×4 squares, $110-$120. Brome, large round and large squares, $100-105. For the week ending May 24, it was reported 1,004.5 tons of grass hay was bought or sold.
Northwest—Little to no demand. Trade activity is very slow. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, large rounds and squares, $90-$100.
North central/northeast—Demand light. Trade activity is slow. Dairy alfalfa steady. Grinding alfalfa steady. Alfalfa ground and delivered steady. Bluestem grass, mostly steady. Brome, steady. Alfalfa, horse hay, small squares, $10-12/bale. Alfalfa: Dairy $1-$1.05/point RFV. Fair/good, grinding alfalfa, large rounds, $70-$80, 3×4 and 4×4 squares, $105-$115 delivered. Alfalfa ground and delivered, $140-$150. Bluestem grass hay, large rounds, $70-$80, CWF large rounds, $85 delivered. Wheat Straw, large rounds and large squares, $45-65. For the week ending May 24, it was reported 680 tons of grinding alfalfa and 698 tons of dairy alfalfa was reported bought or sold.
