Janel: Sunny, breezy, hot

Southern Kansas – Full swing wheat harvest is finally here, I hope! It is now June 8th and our crews are still split up four ways. Three crews are in Southern Kansas, and one is in Northern Oklahoma yet. JC was so close to finishing in Oklahoma a few days ago but got rained out with 100 acres left. The rainy wet weather has caused us all delays but hopefully now we can all just cut wheat!

The wheat I’ve been cutting has surprisingly been high yielding and the test weight has been around 61 pounds per bushel. I have been more worried about mud than anything. It’s rained five to six inches while I’ve been here. That’s a lot. I’ve got wheat to cut but sitting in a mud hole area takes all the fun out of getting wheat cut. Luckily, what I cut today had decent ground conditions. I did use four wheel drive because the ground is soft but able to get the wheat cut. We also had to load trucks on the road.

The ten day forecast looks to be sunny, breezy and hot with highs in the nineties. There are small chances of rain but we’ll see what all we can accomplish. I’m looking forward to getting started and seeing what all Kansas shows us for wheat yields this year. Best of luck to all that are trying to get wheat cut. God bless farmers and harvesters. It’s a tough year no doubt about it.
