Kansas—This past week, compared to last week, demand and movement remained steady. Persistent drought conditions and high temperatures across the state continue to place pressure on producers and hay supplies. Hay inventories remain tight, with producers exploring alternative feed options in preparation for the upcoming winter months, according to the Kansas Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, September 5th.

Southwest—Demand moderate to good. Trade moderate to good. Dairy alfalfa and grass hay, all steady. Grinding alfalfa $10 higher. Alfalfa: Dairy, $1.10-$1.20/point RFV. Premium/Supreme large square 3×4 $250-$260. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, large round and large square 3×4 $225-$235. Ground and delivered locally to feed lots and dairies $250-$260. Alfalfa pellets: Sun cured 15% and 17% protein $280-$290. Grass hay: Bluestem, large square 3×4 $100-$115. Brome, small square $10/bale. Wheat straw, round $140-$150 delivered. The week of Aug. 30- Sept. 5, 6,445 ton of grinding alfalfa, 500 ton of dairy alfalfa, and 50 ton of grass hay was reported bought or sold. The average paid by feedlots on August 1 for alfalfa ground and delivered was $209.66, up $8.67 from the previous month. Usage was 788 tons per day, up 8.67% from last month and total usage was 14,805 ton.
South central—Demand moderate to good. Trade moderate. Dairy alfalfa and grass hay, all steady. Grinding alfalfa $10 higher, ground and delivered $5 higher. Alfalfa: Dairy $1.10-$1.15/point RFV. Premium/Supreme, large square 3×4 $250-$260, small square $13/bale. Good, stock cow, $225-$235. Fair/good, grinding alfalfa large round $210-$220, large square 3×4 $225-$235. Alfalfa ground and delivered $245-$255. Alfalfa pellets: Sun cured 15 pct protein $270-$280, 17% dehydrated $355. Grass hay: Bluestem, small square $10/bale. Brome, large square 3×4 $175-$185, small square $15/bale. The week of Aug. 30-Sept. 5, 7,044 ton of grinding alfalfa, 150 ton of dairy alfalfa, and 142 ton of grass hay was reported bought or sold. The average paid by feedlots on August 1 for alfalfa ground and delivered was $197.08, up $1.44 from the previous month. Usage was 141 tons per day, up 48% from last month and total usage was 4,231 ton.
Southeast—Demand moderate to good. Trade slow to moderate. Alfalfa and grass hay, all steady. Alfalfa: Dairy, $1.20-$1.30/point RFV. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, large square 3×4 $190–$200. Grass hay: Bluestem, large round $100-$110, large square 3×4 $115-$125, small squares $225-$235. Brome, large square 3×4 $180-$190, small square $12/bale. Wheat straw, round $70-$80, small square $6/bale. The week of Aug. 30-Sept. 5, 2,126 ton of grass hay, 300 ton of grinding alfalfa, and 75 ton of dairy alfalfa was reported bought or sold.
Northwest—Demand moderate to good. Trade activity slow to moderate. Dairy alfalfa $1.10-$1.20/point RFV. Premium/Supreme, large square 3×4 $220-$230. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, large square 3×4 $205.00-$215.00.
North central/northeast—Demand moderate. Trade activity slow to moderate. Alfalfa and grass hay, all steady. Alfalfa: Dairy $1.20-$1.30/point RFV. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, large round $165-$175, large square 3×4 $195-$205. Alfalfa ground and delivered $225-$235. Grass Hay: Bluestem, large round $100-$110, large square 3×4 $115-$125, small square $8/bale. Brome, large round $145-$155, large square 3×4 $180-$190, small square, $10/bale. Wheat straw, large square 3×4 $125-$135, small square $6-$7/bale. The week of Aug. 30-Sept. 5, 664 ton of grinding alfalfa, 300 ton of dairy alfalfa, and 1,084 ton of grass hay was reported bought or sold.
