Sherry: A whirlwind 2026 harvest
Hi, y’all! It’s Sherry Zimmerman with Zimmerman Farms out of Bishop, Texas! I’m so happy to be back with y’all and sharing our harvest trails adventures!
It has been a whirlwind of a 2026 harvest season! We kicked off our summer harvest back in June with wheat, moved on to milo, and finally wrapped things up with cotton on September 20. To say cotton harvest was long-drawn-out would be an understatement! It was a long season, but we were thankful to get it finished and move on to the next crop.
We officially started our fall harvest on October 7, but we had to wait for the rain to move out and the ground to dry up before we could really get rolling. While we waited, we decided to take advantage of being in the area and spend a few days in Colorado. We enjoyed fly fishing in the rivers, took our Jeep up Imogene Pass at an elevation of 13,114 feet, and even managed to squeeze in a snowball fight! You don’t get many opportunities to go from harvest delays to playing in the snow, so we figured we might as well make the most of it. Once the weather and field conditions finally cooperated, we were ready to get back to work. We are now busy picking corn.

Corn yields have been all over the place this season, averaging anywhere from 20 to 40 bushels per acre, with some areas reaching as high as 130 bushels per acre. We’ve seen some good spots and some not-so-good ones. The weather has certainly taken its toll on this fall crop, and the lack of rain is showing in the fields. It’s a reminder of just how much Mother Nature has a say in how the harvest turns out. You can put in the work, keep the equipment running, and do everything you can to get a crop out of the field, but at the end of the day, we still depend on the weather.

Even with the challenges this season has thrown our way, we are extremely thankful for every acre we are able to harvest. Farming and harvesting come with plenty of ups and downs, and you learn to celebrate the good days while making the best of the tough ones. That’s just part of the life we’ve chosen, and we wouldn’t trade it for anything!
Thankfully, the recent weather has been great for harvest. The sun is shining, the wind is blowing, and we’re making progress in the fields. After all the waiting, we’re happy to be back at it and getting this crop out of the field.
Until next time, y’all, we’ll keep the combines rolling and hope for a few more good days in the field. Thanks for following along with Zimmerman Farms on the harvest trail!
