Hay market activity slow
In Kansas, hay market activity is slow, although demand remains good for both grinding alfalfa and grass hay. Very little alfalfa was reported being bought or sold as supplies have dried up, according to the Kansas Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, March 20. Prices given on a per-ton basis, unless otherwise noted.
Southwest: Dairy alfalfa, grass hay, grinding alfalfa, ground and delivered steady, movement slow. Alfalfa, horse, small squares, $240-$250. Supreme dairy, .95-1/point RFV $175-$185; premium, $160-$170; good, $140-$150. Stock or dry cow alfalfa, $115-$125. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, $130-$150. New crop alfalfa, $110-$115 standing; $140-$145 at the edge; Ground and delivered locally to feedlots and dairies, $160-$180, with an instance $200. Bluestem grass hay, large squares, $80-$90, large rounds, $70-$80. For the week ending March 17, 9,410 tons of grinding alfalfa and 1,990 tons of dairy alfalfa were delivered. Cornstalks, large rounds, $55-$65, ground and delivered, $70-$75.
South central: Dairy alfalfa, grass hay, grinding alfalfa, ground and delivered, alfalfa pellets, stock cow steady, movement slow. Horse alfalfa, small squares, $200-$210, dairy, .95-1/point RFV, Supreme, $175-$185; premium, $160-$170; good, $140-$150. Stock cow alfalfa, $135-$145 delivered. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, $115-$135, with an instance at $150. Ground and delivered locally to feedlots, $140-$155, with two instances at $165-$175. Sun-cured alfalfa pellets, 15% protein, $180-$195, 17% protein, $180-$200, dehydrated 17% $220-$230. For the week ending March 17, 3,736 tons of grinding alfalfa and 553 tons of dairy alfalfa were delivered. Grass hay, bluestem, large squares, $80-$90, large rounds, $70-$80. Stock cow alfalfa, $140-$150. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, $100-$110. Ground and delivered, $125-$135. Premium bluestem grass hay, small squares, $110-$120. Good, medium and large squares, $80-$100, large rounds, $65-$75. Brome, small squares, $6-$8/bale. Good, medium and large squares, $100-$115, with an instance $120, large rounds, $70-$80. Oat hay, large rounds, $85-$95, with an instance $130 delivered. For the week ending March 17, 2,071 tons of grass hay were delivered. Straw, medium and large squares, $50-$60. Northwest: Dairy alfalfa, grinding alfalfa and ground and delivered steady to $10 higher, movement slow. Alfalfa, small squares, $5-$6/bale. Horse or goat, $175-$200. North central/northeast:

Supreme dairy alfalfa, .95-1.05/point RFV, $175-$195. Premium, $170-$185; good, $150-$170. New crop dairy quality alfalfa, $175-$185, good stock cow, $110-$120.
