Color your own barn quilts

Just in time for Christmas shopping. The Kansas Flint Hills Quilt Trail announces “Kansas Barn Quilts” coloring books by John H. Lettau. Lettau, a geometric design fanatic, has previously offered other state coloring books through Amazon.com and has recently added three books featuring Kansas barn quilts. The Kansas Flint Hills Quilt Trail is featured in Book One and Book Two, and a third Kansas book is available for North Central and Northwestern Kansas Barn Quilt Trail.

Lettau reached out to the KSFHQT and the NC/NW Trail committees earlier this summer and worked diligently to compile a perfect variety of barn quilts displayed through the Flint Hills, as well as North Central and Northwest Kansas. Each book contains basic barn quilt information and 50 barn quilt designs with locations. The covers feature John’s signature paper cut-out art barn quilt designs.

Lettau, after serving in the Army, moved to Santa Maria, California, with an educator career of 33 years. He says, “I always made sure I taught geometric design creation to all grade levels during art classes.” In 1973 Lettau published Graph Paper Designs that was used in teaching geometric designs with hundreds of elementary students over the years. Over the past 60 odd years Lettau has created over 500 plus different geometric designs using various methods and materials, specializing in his creation of cut paper barn quilt designs.

Several years ago Lettau visited relatives in Wisconsin and got hooked on painting barn quilts, including 2’ x 2’ and 1’ x 1’ sizes. He now shares his love of barn quilting with workshops to teach the art. He created barn quilt coloring books for Wisconsin, California, Vermont, Iowa, Tennessee and Indiana, before introducing three book projects included in the “Barn Quilts of Kansas” series.

The Kansas Flint Hills Quilt Trail and the North Central and Northwestern Barn Quilt Trail were formed to promote agri-tourism in the rural areas of Kansas. Lettau’s coloring books are a great celebration of the barn quilt art thriving in Kansas. More Quilt Trail and Coloring Book information is available on Facebook and the Trail websites.
