Newell sheep sales report
The St. Onge Newell Sheep Yards, St. Onge, South Dakota, reported receipts of 6,160 head selling on Oct. 25, compared to 4,500 head a week ago and 2,437 head last year, according to the USDA-South Dakota Department of Agriculture Market News, Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Compared to a week ago, feeder lambs under 90 pounds were selling $2 to $6 higher. Demand for over 90-pound lambs appeared to be light resulting in unevenly lower sales. Ewe lambs had a higher demand in a market with many bidders. There were many long, good quality strings of feeder lambs, ewe lambs, yearlings and replacement ewes. Demand for replacement ewes was very good with a large dispersion attracting many buyers. Feeder lambs made up 40% of this sale, slaughter ewes 5% and the balance replacement ewes.
