NASS reports current sorghum crop conditions
According to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, for the week ending Aug. 26 sorghum conditions were as follows in the Midwest Ag/High Plains Journal coverage area:
Nebraska: Sorghum condition rated 0 percent very poor, 2 poor, 12 fair, 62 good, and 24 excellent. Sorghum coloring was 62 percent, well ahead of 36 last year and 41 average. Mature was 3 percent.
Kansas: Sorghum condition rated 2 percent very poor, 5 poor, 25 fair, 55 good, and 13 excellent. Sorghum headed was 93 percent, ahead of 87 last year, and near 89 average. Coloring was 38 percent, ahead of 24 last year and 30 average. Mature was 3 percent, equal to last year, and near 2 average.
Oklahoma: Sorghum coloring reached 43 percent, down 8 points from the previous year and down 7 points from normal. Sorghum mature reached 14 percent, unchanged from the previous year.
Texas: Producers in the Northern High Plains were using pesticides on sorghum to control populations of sugarcane aphids and head worms.
South Dakota: Sorghum condition rated 0 percent very poor, 5 poor, 27 fair, 67 good, and 1 excellent. Sorghum headed was 92 percent, near 94 last year and 96 average. Coloring was 41 percent, ahead of 27 last year, and near 38 average.
Missouri: Sorghum headed progressed to 90 percent. Sorghum turning color progressed to 58 percent, while sorghum matured reached 7 percent this week. Sorghum condition was rated 3 percent very poor, 23 percent poor, 37 percent fair, 33 percent good, and 4 percent excellent.
