John Griswold of Stillwater, Oklahoma, has been elected to the American Simmental Association Board of Trustees and will represent the South Central region.
Griswold Cattle runs registered Simmental, Angus and Maintainer cows, each breed making up one third of the herd. In addition to raising females, bulls and show steers, they market semen across the country. Depending on the market, Griswold Cattle also feeds cattle and has been involved in many aspects of the business, which shapes their decisions as a seedstock producer. They hold two annual sales selling 400 females in December and 200 bulls and several females each April. Griswold Cattle also hold sales in Florida and Alabama. Griswold recently completed a three-year term on the American Maine-Anjou Association Board.
He started raising cattle after graduating from Oklahoma State University, buying 17 of his father’s original Griswold Angus cows. This became the base of the cow herd and in 2001 they purchased the Birkland family’s herd in South Dakota. Griswold spent 11 years running this 1,000 head Angus herd, which were bred to both their Simmental and Maine-Anjou bulls. Those cows have since been sold from the herd and Griswold has returned to Stillwater. This experience shaped their Simmental program. He and his wife, Jeannie, have three children Maggie, Garrett and Jack.
