Youth benefit from AFR Ag Achievement Contest at Oklahoma Youth Expo
Behind the scenes at the recent Oklahoma Youth Expo, Micaela Danker and other AFR staff worked long hours helping OYE participants to earn money.
It started months before when AFR staff prepared written and individual interviews. As the world’s largest youth livestock show got underway, AFR staff were getting chairs, tables and judges organized.
“We worked hard to prepare an exam that was fair but accurately tested their knowledge of animal agriculture,” Danker said. Danker is the director of youth development for AFR.
The contest is open to 11th and 12th grade 4-H and FFA members exhibiting breed or market animals at OYE. The contest focuses on showmanship, a written animal science exam and an interview. More than $5,000 in total prize money is awarded.
This year’s group started with 109 entries and the top 10 individuals will be recognized at OYE’s Grand Drive ceremony.
“This is a really big deal for these kids,” Danker said. “To be recognized and to have another opportunity to earn money for their education is extremely important. We are glad to invest in Oklahoma’s youth.”
