No-Till and Inter-Seeding of cover crops will be the focus of two upcoming events

Two free educational events on managing wet weather and improving soil health and profitability by no-tilling and inter seeding cover crops with corn, soybeans, and wheat will be held on July 10 and July 11 in eastern South Dakota.

The event on July 10 will run from 8:15 a.m. through 1 p.m. at the South Dakota State University Southeast Research Farm, southwest of Beresford. The July 11 event, will be held from 8:15 a.m. through 4 p.m. at Blue Dasher Farm, north of Estelline and west of Brandt. Both events are co-sponsored by The South Dakota Soil Health Coalition, USDA NRCS South Dakota, SDSU Southeast Research Farm, SDSU Extension, Ducks Unlimited, South Dakota Corn and the Oregon Ryegrass Commission.

Speakers to present at these two events include: producers Dick Nissen and Loran Steinlage, Pete Sexton of the SDSU Southeast Research Farm, Graig Reicks SDSU Researcher, as well as Jon Lundgren and Mike Bredeson of Blue Dasher Farm. Nissen will be sharing his experiences in “No-Tilling Along the Vermillion River”, while Steinlage will discuss “How No-Till and Cover Crops Help Manage Wet Weather” as well as “How to Improve Soil Health and Profitability with Cover Crops and No-Till”. Sexton will discuss no-till at the Southeast Research Farm and Reicks will share SDSU research results on inter-seeding. Lundgren and Blue Dasher Farm Researcher Mike Bredeson will be presenting on “The Power of Plant Diversity In Pest Management” and provide attendees with an overview of the farm’s activities.
