Colorado: The number of cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in Colorado feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 head or larger was estimated at 900,000 head as of Sept. 1. The latest inventory was 1 percent above last month and 5 percent above the Sept. 1, 2017 inventory.
Cattle feeders with 1,000 head or larger capacity marketed an estimated 190,000 head of fed cattle during August 2018. This was 12 percent above last month’s marketings, but no change from the marketings one year earlier.
An estimated 205,000 cattle and calves were placed on feed during August 2018, 46 percent above the previous month’s placements and 17 percent above August 2017 placements. Of the number placed in August, 17 percent weighed less than 600 pounds, 12 percent weighed from 600 to 699 pounds, 20 percent weighed from 700 to 799 pounds, 24 percent weighed from 800-899 pounds, and 27 percent weighed 900 pounds and greater.
Other disappearance for August, at 5,000 head, was 5,000 head below last month, but the same as last year.
Iowa: Cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in Iowa feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 680,000 head on Sept. 1, according to the latest National Agricultural Statistics Service, Cattle on Feed report. This was down 3 percent from Aug. 1, but up 6 percent from Sept. 1, 2017. Iowa feedlots with a capacity of less than 1,000 head had 425,000 head on feed, down 10 percent from last month and down 6 percent from last year. Cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in all Iowa feedlots totaled 1,105,000 head, down 6 percent from last month but up 1 percent from last year.
Placements of cattle and calves in Iowa feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 or more head during August totaled 82,000 head, up 24 percent from last month but down 11 percent from last year. Feedlots with a capacity of less than 1,000 head placed 30,000 head, down 36 percent from last month and down 27 percent from last year. Placements for all feedlots in Iowa totaled 112,000 head, down 1 percent from last month and down 16 percent from last year.
Marketings of fed cattle from Iowa feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 or more head during August totaled 100,000 head, up 35 percent from last month but down 1 percent from last year. Feedlots with a capacity of less than 1,000 head marketed 73,000 head, down 3 percent from last month but up 22 percent from last year. Marketings for all feedlots in Iowa were 173,000 head, up 16 percent from last month and up 7 percent from last year.
Other disappearance from all feedlots in Iowa totaled 4,000 head.
Kansas: In Kansas feedlots with capacities of 1,000 or more head, pens contained 2.31 million cattle on feed on Sept. 1, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service. This inventory was up 4 percent from last year.
Placements during August totaled 520,000 head, up 5 percent from 2017.
Fed cattle marketings for the month of August totaled 430,000 head, down 3 percent from last year.
Other disappearance during August totaled 10,000 head, unchanged from last year.
Minnesota: Cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in Minnesota for feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 125,000 head on Sept. 1, according to the latest National Agricultural Statistics Service, Cattle on Feed report. This is down 5,000 head from last month but up 5,000 head from last year.
Placements during August totaled 23,000 head, up 6,000 head from last month and up 3,000 head from last year. Marketings for August were 27,000 head, up 6,000 head from last month but down 2,000 head from last year. Other disappearance totaled 1,000 head.
Nebraska: In Nebraska feedlots with capacities of 1,000 or more head, yards contained 2.33 million cattle on feed on Sept. 1, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service. This inventory was up 8 percent from last year.
Placements during August totaled 480,000 head, up 2 percent from 2017.
Fed cattle marketings for the month of August totaled 470,000 head, unchanged from last year. Other disappearance during August totaled 10,000 head, unchanged from last year.
Oklahoma: Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in Oklahoma feedlots with capacity of 1,000 head or more totaled 320,000 head on Sept. 1, up 2 percent from a year ago.

Producers placed 65,000 head in commercial feedlots during August, unchanged from a year ago. Oklahoma commercial feeders marketed 59,000 head during August, down 8 percent from 2017.
Other disappearance during August totaled 1,000 head, unchanged from a year ago.
South Dakota: In South Dakota feedlots with capacities of 1,000 or more head, pens contained 200,000 cattle on feed on Sept. 1, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service. This inventory was down 7 percent from last year.
Placements during August totaled 49,000 head, up 9 percent from 2017.
Fed cattle marketings for the month of August totaled 48,000 head, down 2 percent from last year.
Other disappearance during August totaled 1,000 head, unchanged from last year.
Texas: Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in Texas feedlots with capacity of 1,000 head or more totaled 2.68 million head on Sept. 1, up 3 percent from a year ago. Producers placed 415,000 head in commercial feedlots during August, up 8 percent from a year ago. Texas commercial feeders marketed 440,000 head during August, up 1 percent from 2017.
On Sept. 1, there were 2.34 million head of cattle and calves on feed in the Northern High Plains, 87 percent of the state’s total. The number on feed across the area was up 3 percent from last year but down 2 percent from the Aug. 1 total. August placements in the Northern High Plains totaled 361,000 head, up 6 percent from the July total. Marketings were up 15 percent from last month at 393,000 head.
United States: Cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 11.1 million head on Sept. 1. The inventory was 6 percent above Sept. 1, 2017. This is the highest Sept. 1 inventory since the series began in 1996.
Placements in feedlots during August totaled 2.07 million head, 7 percent above 2017. Net placements were 2.02 million head. During August, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds were 430,000 head, 600-699 pounds were 335,000 head, 700-799 pounds were 460,000 head, 800-899 pounds were 475,000 head, 900-999 pounds were 240,000 head, and 1,000 pounds and greater were 130,000 head.
Marketings of fed cattle during August totaled 1.98 million head, slightly above 2017. Other disappearance totaled 55,000 head during August, 12 percent above 2017.
