Oklahoma Genetics Inc. has announced a new wheat variety called Orange Blossom CL+, which has the official release to move forward with commercialization. Brett Carver, regents professor and wheat genetics chair at Oklahoma State University, was a special guest on the Red Dirt Agronomy Podcast recently, and he spoke about the new variety.
He believes Orange Blossom, which is named after the song “Orange Blossom Special,” will eclipse the popular OSU variety Doublestop CL+.
“It is 66% Doublestop, so effectively, wherever Doublestop has worked, this is going to work,” Carvers said. “The only place it won’t work quite as well is in a bakery. We have one protein out of whack, but it has excellent milling quality. This is going to be the test weight of Doublestop, if not better, if you can imagine that.”
Carver said testing for this variety began in 2019, and he initially took notice of how the variety held up to strip and leaf rust. After more trials, he saw its full potential for growers in the Southern Plains.
Orange Blossom is an excellent grazing and grain-only variety, the same acid tolerance of Doublestop, but with superior yield potential, he said.
“You want to do something better than what you already have, but it’s hard to beat Doublestop. I think we did,” Carver said.
Orange Blossom is a Clearfield variety, meaning it is a non-genetically modified crop with herbicide tolerance technology, with resistance to imidazolinone herbicides to control grassy weeds.
Orange Blossom is not on the market yet, but Carver expects 2,000 bushels of foundation seed to be available in the fall of 2025. Certified seed should be commercially available in the fall of 2026.
