Janel: Cutting wheat

Southwest Oklahoma – Wheat cutting weather didn’t arrive until May 31 and June 1. I was asked all spring when harvest will start and I predicted a June 1 start date. We have all nine combines cutting wheat. We have a full crew and everyone was ready to get wheat harvest started. The wheat has been yielding around 25 to 45 bushels per acre so far. The test weights have been mostly around 63 pounds per bushel. The protein has been around 11 percent.

It certainly feels great to be back in the field cutting wheat. I’m looking forward to another hopefully busy harvesting season. There is green wheat around yet. I haven’t ever seen so much green wheat here at wheat harvest time. The fields look somewhat ready from the road but when I go walk the fields there’s green wheat in them. It’s got to be ripe to get it cut because the elevator wants the grain dry. It takes hot and dry weather to get wheat to ripen.

Today is June 1 and we attended the local church harvest appreciation breakfast this morning. We try to go every year when we’re here. It’s very nice of the church community people to serve us harvesters breakfast so thank you! We do appreciate it and look forward to attending each year! They always make us feel welcome here!

It was around 90 degrees today but the humidity didn’t get below 50 percent for too long. We’ve had an east wind for a few days and are expecting more rain later this week. We’ve had to use four wheel drive to cut around mud holes so I’m hoping it’ll stay dry so we don’t have to fight any more mud. Best of luck to you all getting started with wheat harvest!
