Kansas hay demand increases slightly

Rain in late May and early June delayed alfalfa harvest for many producers in southwest Kansas. The first cutting like pictured in this field will likely go for grinding hay due to the excess moisture. (Journal photo by Kylene Scott.)

This past week, demand increased slightly while prices stayed steady, according to the Kansas Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, Oct. 28.

Trade remained slow and steady, with no new contracts being moved. Producers have been busy with harvest and planting and have not been moving high volumes of hay. There is still plenty of forage across the state, with many producers waiting for a weather change to increase demand. Prices below reflect the average price. There could be prices higher and lower prices than those published.
