Most cotton in good to excellent condition

Temperatures for the week ending Aug. 19 averaged 76.4 degrees, 0.1 degrees above normal, according to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, Heartland Regional Field Office, Missouri. Precipitation averaged 1.70 inches statewide, 0.85 inches above normal. There were 4.9 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture supply was rated 34 percent very short, 32 percent short, 33 percent adequate and 1 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was rated 43 percent very short, 34 percent short, and 23 percent adequate.

Corn dough progressed to 95 percent, 8 percentage points ahead of the 5-year average. Corn dented reached 79 percent, 21 percentage points ahead of last week. Corn matured reached 10 percent, 7 percentage points ahead of the 5-year average. Corn condition was rated 21 percent very poor, 23 percent poor, 28 percent fair, 23 percent good, and 5 percent excellent. Soybeans blooming progressed to 94 percent. Soybeans setting pods progressed to 76 percent, 14 percentage points ahead of the 5-year average. Soybeans coloring reached 2 percent. Soybean condition was rated 14 percent very poor, 23 percent poor, 29 percent fair, 29 percent good, and 5 percent excellent. Cotton bolls opening reached 40 percent, 14 percentage points ahead of last week. Cotton condition was rated 10 percent poor, 27 percent fair, 50 percent good, and 13 percent excellent. Rice headed was reported at 97 percent, 14 percentage points ahead of the 5-year average. Rice condition was rated 11 percent poor, 16 percent fair, 51 percent good, and 22 percent excellent. Sorghum headed progressed to 87 percent. Sorghum turning color progressed to 44 percent, while sorghum matured reached 1 percent this week. Sorghum condition was rated 4 percent very poor, 20 percent poor, 40 percent fair, 32 percent good, and 4 percent excellent.
